I was in my first year of college, making friends and enjoying life, but then my whole world turned upside down. I had a heart attack. It felt like someone was stabbing (刺) me in the chest with a knife over and over again.

After three months of rest I went back to college, but then things took a turn for the worse. I was staying at my Nana’s house and woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain in my chest. I knew I was having a heart attack again.

I couldn’t even shout for help. Luckily my grandpa was going to the toilet and heard me falling out of bed. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be here.

The two holes in my heart were causing the problems and I needed an operation immediately to repair them. Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t go well and they only managed to repair one of the holes.

When I woke up from the operation, I had a really dry mouth and couldn’t wait to have something to eat and drink. The biggest shock of all came when I was told that I needed a heart transplant (移植) and was put on the register. The doctors were stunned at how quickly heart failure came on – it usually takes years, but it took my heart less than six months to get to that stage. My whole world came crashing down, but I stayed strong. It was a choice between crying every day and getting on with my life.

As time went on, life became even harder. I hated feeling weak all the time and needing help with everything. It got to the point where I thought I would never get a new heart. I was diagnosed with depression (抑郁症).

Even though I thought that Christmas 2008 would be my last, I really enjoyed it and even had a good New Year. Everyone was crying for me when the clock struck midnight and they told me to keep fighting.

A week later, I got a call from the doctors saying they’d found a suitable donor (捐赠人). My wish came true and thankfully the operation went well. I spent four hours in surgery where they took out my old heart and put a new one in. When I woke up I burst out crying. I had a second chance at life.

1. What happened when the author was having his second heart attack?

A. He felt less pain than he had during the previous one.

C. He narrowly escaped death thanks to his grandfather.

D. He decided to have an operation to repair the two holes in his heart.

2. When the author learned that he needed a heart transplant, he ______.

A. couldn’t help crying every day

B. chose to continue to fight for his life

C. felt so depressed that he tried to kill himself

D. was so anxious that his heart failure developed very quickly

3. At the beginning of 2009, the author ______.

A. was convinced that the past Christmas had been his last

B. felt blessed and grateful for his second chance at life

C. received a heart transplant but the operation didn’t go well

D. felt hopeless all the time and was diagnosed with depression

4. Which one would be the best title for the text?

A. Choices matter B. Rebuilding my world

C. Waiting for a new heart D. The most special Christmas

Taylore is a kid who stops by to ride sometimes and help us with chores. Barely 15, she’s never short of advice, and one of her favorite pastimes is teasing me about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.

Last summer four of us rode down the trail (小径) behind our woods: my wife Karen, Taylore, Taylore’s friend Kendall and me. I was riding my 13-year-old, Tawny.

We were two miles from home when, for some unexplainable reason, I pushed Tawny into a gallop (飞驰). The other horses were anxious to catch up, and just like that, the race was on.

Taylore brushed past my left leg and, seconds later, Kendall went by on my right. I realized Tawny was covering ground faster than I’d ever seen her. She strained every muscle in her body to catch up with the girls. It was like a truck weaving over a mountain road without brakes (闸). Part of me felt perfectly in control, while another part screamed that I wasn’t.

In half a mile I knew we’d be crossing the highway, so I prayed (祈祷) that the girls would be fine. I gave up calculating how long it might take before my horse would be tired enough to want to slow down.

I was just about out of answers when I saw the girls slowing in front of me. Their horses were relaxed and comfortable, not even breathing hard. Taylore’s face glowed (发光). She gave me a high five. “Wow, you did well,” she said. “I knew you’d go fast when you were ready.”

No one in the group had even broken a sweat – except me. My nerves were still a little raw from the crazy pace. My heart pounded, too, but not from exercise. Karen claims I was showing off for the girls that day, and maybe she’s right. But I think I had something to prove. Because despite my wrinkles (皱纹), glasses and gray hair, I was feeling young at heart. And, like a horse on a warm summer day, I’m always ready to kick up my heels.

5. How did the race between the girls and the author begin?

A. His horse’s gallop made the other horses want to catch up.

B. He wanted to show off his riding skills for the girls.

C. They wanted to know whose horse could run fastest.

D. They teased him about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.

6. During the race, ______.

A. the author’s horse outran the girls’ horses the whole time

B. the author was confident that Tawny was in control

C. the girls were so anxious to win that they sweated a lot

D. the author’s good performance took Taylore by surprise

7. When the race ended, the author’s heart pounded because ______.

A. he was feeling thrilled and young

B. it was really tough exercise for him

C. he was worried that the girls might be in danger

D. he felt quite embarrassed that he had lost the race

8. The phrase “kick up my heels” at the end can be replaced by “______”.

A. devote myself B. enjoy myself

C. accept my challenges D. take part in a running competition

C

The military (部队) can be a lonely place when you’re 18, far from home and injured. Lance Dillon fit that description. I met him about 25 years ago, when I was a nurse in the hospital on a small military base on Kodiak Island, Alaska, where my husband was stationed with the Coast Guard. Lance was a nice kid from Pennsylvania who had broken both ankles in a rock climbing accident. He had to stay at the hospital for three months.

The hospital was very small and seldom busy, so we could devote a lot of time to Lance. He was fun to be around, but as time passed he became restless. He wrote letters home, often writing to his girl in New York. Her name was Sarah, and as soon as she graduated from a business college, Lance hoped to bring her to Alaska. Close to Halloween, Sarah wrote him the classic “Dear John letter”. It was not a good time. We all worried about Lance and could see the dark shadows thickening around him. He had two friends, Rory and Kal, who came by in the evening to play cards and talk with him. They were there for him and made him laugh. But as Thanksgiving approached, the clouds began to form around Lance again. He’d sit for hours staring out the window into the snow.

When I was growing up, Thanksgiving always meant lots of family, lots of noise and plenty of food. So that Thanksgiving, I said I would bring some sunshine into Lance’s holiday. I told him I would take him to my house for turkey. Rory and Kal would be there, along with our neighbors, my husband and our two boys.

Making a chair with their arms, Rory and Kal carried Lance into the house. Yes, that was a noisy, happy Thanksgiving – just the way I thought it should be. We started midmorning and didn’t take Lance back to the hospital until after midnight. He smiled for days afterward.

A few weeks later, Lance’s mother wrote to thank me for caring for her son during his Thanksgiving away from home. I still have that letter. Someday I may have to write a thank-you letter to some woman who will care for one of my sons when he’s far from home and needs a home-cooked meal.

9. What can we conclude from the first two paragraphs?

A. Lance was shot in the ankles when carrying out a military operation.

B. Though busy, the hospital staff still spent a lot of time attending to Lance.

C. The author kept a close eye on Lance and felt sympathetic toward him.

D. Thanks to his friends Rory and Kal, Lance was always cheerful when in hospital.

10. The “Dear John letter” Lance received from Sarah was most probably a letter ______.

A. wishing him a happy Thanksgiving

B. apologizing that she could not come to visit

C. informing him that their relationship was over

D. making fun of him before Halloween

11. At the author’s Thanksgiving party, Lance ______.

A. was the only guest invited

B. was cheered up and felt happy again

C. could stand on his own two feet without help

D. realized that friendship is the most important thing in life

D

“It’s OK if you have to go, buddy,” I said, looking into those eyes that showed love, devotion and friendship.

But he wasn’t coming home.

Scout was taking his last ride from a specialist in Dallas back to our vet (兽医). He started out on the floor in the back. When we got close to home he jumped up and leaned against me. Then he crawled (缓慢地爬行), obviously hurting, into the passenger seat where he always rode. For a minute he looked out the window and then back at me.

My first memory of Scout was as a 6-week-old pup, sat on the edge of the seat, front paws (爪子) on the window, looking back at Twin Pines Farm as he left. You might have expected him to act nervous, but he just smiled and watched.

He smiled all the time – we called him the world’s happiest dog. He graciously put up with new dogs and puppies. He wasn’t what you’d call a devoted father, but he would play with the puppies if nobody was looking.

He was all business when there was work to do. Most of his duties were riding in the truck, playing Frisbee (飞盘) or lounging (闲逛). But when needed, he was always there to load a cranky (暴躁的) cow, to keep coyotes (丛林狼) away, to make me feel OK when I was miles away, knowing he would protect his family with every last breath.

How do these four-legged fur balls get so deep in our hearts? It hurts when they go. But when you ask yourself: Would I give up having known him to make the pain go away? The answer is, of course, no.

I think Scout was probably a once-in-a-lifetime dog. But his son Gus is playing around in our backyard right now, and he had his first ride in the truck yesterday. He has the same way of looking out the window and then back at me with a smile on his face.

Scout, however your son turns out, we’ll always remember you. In time, it won’t hurt so much, and we’ll get by. It’s OK, buddy. You had to go.

12. According to the author, Scout ______.

A. wasn’t feeling well when he left

B. came to his house when he was 6 years old

C. was a devoted father and able to protect his family

D. was nervous at first but then turned out to be a happy dog

13. What can be inferred from the last 3 paragraphs?

A. Gus looks exactly like his father Scout.

B. Gus will also leave the house when he grows up.

C. The pain of losing Scout is getting stronger in the author’s heart.

D. The author would still have had Scout if he had known that Scout would leave.

14. What’s the author’s attitude toward Scout leaving?

A. Unconcerned. B. Understanding.

C. Hurt and angry. D. Worried and regretful.

15. The article would be most likely to appear in ______.

A. a novel B. a technology magazine

C. a news report D. a farming magazine

One cold December morning in 2009, I boarded a bus with my four large bags at Chandigarh, where I’d been working. I was headed home to Rampur Bushahr, Himachal Pradesh. A few hours into the journey a well-dressed young man got in at Shimla and took the seat next to mine. I was wary (警惕的). I’d often come across men eager to chat up a girl traveling on her own. So I wasn’t surprised when he spoke up.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“Rampur,” I replied and put on my earphones. He didn’t bother me after that.

It started to rain and water was dripping through the roof right on to my lap (怀里). Seeing that, the man emptied a plastic shopping bag full of clothes, which he pushed into his travel bag. He then handed me the plastic bag. I accepted it with a sheepish “thanks” before spreading it on my lap.

Minutes later, the bus broke down! The conductor announced we’d have to move to another bus that would reach us shortly, and that there’d be no more buses after that, since there had been heavy snowfall near Shimla. My co-passengers got off and stood on the road, ready to rush into the next bus. The conductor reluctantly helped me offload my luggage.

When the bus finally arrived, it had many passengers already. The crowd struggled to get in and I was shoved aside. As I stood there feeling very upset, I saw a hand waving out to me from the entrance of the bus. It was the same young man. He stood there blocking the doorway. I passed my bags to him and he placed them inside one by one, as if we were family traveling together. He then gently helped me in. I soon got pushed to the middle of the bus, where I stood for the next two hours. As we approached Rampur, I craned my neck to look for him – I knew he had been standing right in front. He was not there, and I badly wanted to talk to him. He must have got off at an earlier stop without letting me know. Why would he? He’d done what he had to. I was the one who couldn’t apologize for my attitude or thank him.

16. At first, the author assumed the young man was trying to ______.

A. chat her up B. seek her help

C. steal her stuff D. be nice to her

17. Why did the man empty one of his plastic shopping bags?

A. To help the author to keep out of the rain.

B. To find an outfit for the author to get changed into.

C. To cover the window and prevent the rain from coming in.

D. To remove his clothes from inside it and put them into his travel bag.

18. During the process of transferring to another bus, ______.

A. the passengers got on the next bus in an orderly way

B. the author had to offload her luggage on her own

C. the author and the man pretended to be family members

D. the author managed to get on the bus with the help of the man

19. At the end of her journey, the author probably felt ______ the man.

A. grateful to B. sympathetic to

C. disappointed in D. concerned about

20. How is the article mainly developed?

A. With examples. B. With comparisons.

C. By describing the events in order of time.

D. By describing the events in order of importance.
