On Aug 19, the two-time Olympic *pole vault champion announced her retirement. As most Russian athletes were banned from taking part in this year’s Olympic Games following a doping scandal, Isinbayeva lost the chance to defend her dominance at the pole vault in Rio. Speaking at a press conference, the world record holder claimed that a winner in a pole vault competition without her isn’t a true winner. “I will congratulate the new pole vault champion, of course, but I’m sure she will feel it’s not entirely gold because goal number one is to beat Isinbayeva,” she said. Greece’s Ekaterini Stefanidi won the title, clearing 4.85 meters, which is 0.21 meters lower than Isinbayeva’s record.
