After a series of defeats, China’s national soccer team has only a slim chance to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia. Marcello Lippi, who was appointed head coach of the national team on Oct 22, is now seen as the white knight who will save Chinese soccer. The silver-haired top-level coach led Italy to win the World Cup in 2006. He will be paid 20 million euros (147 million yuan) a year in a three-year contract with the Chinese Football Association. However, some Chinese soccer fans believe that more money and resources should be devoted to youth soccer training.
