Science fiction crime (犯罪) movie Ghost in the Shell (《攻壳机动队》) will be released on April 7 on the Chinese mainland. Starring US actress Scarlett Johansson, the movie is based on the Japanese manga of the same name. But upon hearing the news that Johansson was to play the movie’s lead, fans criticized the casting (角色分配) choice. Some said it was another example of Hollywood “whitewashing”, which is when white actors are chosen to play non-white characters. In an interview with Marie Claire magazine, Johansson disagreed, saying: “I certainly would never presume (擅自) to play another race of a person. Diversity (多样性) is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive (冒犯的) .”
