China now has about 1 billion unused mobile phones, but only 2 percent have been recycled, according to Chinanews.
One reason is that resale prices of old phones are much lower than their original prices. According to figures on the phone trade-in platform of Jingdong, the average recycling price for an old iPhone 7 is 3,258 yuan. However, the lowest price for a new iPhone 7 is 5,388 yuan – much higher than the recycling price.
Besides not getting much money for their old phones, many users are afraid of privacy disclosure (隐私泄露), as mobile phones usually contain much of our personal information.
However, Xiong Zhou, co-founder of China’s phone recycling platform Huishoubao, told China Daily that customers should develop the habit of selling their old devices when buying a replacement.
In addition, many phones end up simply being thrown away with household waste, resulting in environmental pollution.
