In Greek poet Homer’s Iliad, the jealous Menelaus seeks revenge on Paris for stealing his wife Helen. The consequence is the beginning of the Trojan War. Revenge (复仇) may be the oldest theme in literature. Indeed, without revenge, the world of literature would be a lot smaller. This is why Jason Reynolds’ novel Long Way Down fits in perfectly with this ancient theme, although he manages to make it original and modern. The tale is filled with questions that would be familiar to many young people today.
