Tess of the d’Urbervilles (《德伯维尔家的苔丝》，1891) is a novel written by English author Thomas Hardy, and is set in impoverished (穷困的) rural England. The main character, Tess, goes to the rich Mrs d’Urberville’s home to lay claim to her fortune, but ends up being raped (强奸) by Alec d’Urberville. Tess meets a man named Angel Clare and falls in love with him. However, Clare isn’t happy with Tess when she tells him about her past. In order to win back Clare’s heart, Tess decides to commit a huge crime, which she pays for dearly. The following extract depicts disputes between Angel Clare and his father, suggesting religion’s great impact on people’s minds and education in Victorian England.
