April Fools’ Day started in the 16th century in Europe. Before that time, New Year’s Day was celebrated on April 1. Then a new calendar was introduced (引入) called the Gregorian calendar. January 1 became the first day of the year, but many people did not know about it. So those who continued (继续) to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1 were teased. They were called fools.
