Q
Dear Dale,
My class is about to hold a basketball competition and most of us have been asked to become cheerleaders and practice every day. I’m not interested in being a cheerleader. But it seems that I’ll be ignored and left out if I don’t do it. What should I do?

Dear Adam,
We often have to do things that we don’t really want to. In fact, life is mainly made up of the things that we don’t want to do but we have to do.
But when we’re faced with these situations, we shouldn’t back down from them. Instead, we should take on every challenge we’re given, and try our hardest to complete each one as well as we can.
If we do this, it really shows how strong our character is.
People don’t become successful by not accepting challenges because they don’t think they’ll enjoy them.
In fact, many successful people got to where they are by working hard and doing things that were no fun at all.
As for you, you may not like the idea of being a cheerleader but that’s no reason for you not to do it.
Rather than thinking about the negative (负面的) parts of everything we’re asked to do, we should think about the positive (积极的) parts. This way, things don’t seem so bad.
In your case, by being a cheerleader, you’ll not only be supporting your classmates but also your whole school. You may even discover that you really enjoy cheerleading – plus you’ll get the chance to make some new friends.
Sure, you may have to spend a lot of time practicing, but you’ll gain (收获) a great experience.
So, when it comes to trying new things, just remember one thing: Always be positive. Dale
