Animal math expert

动物界的数学家。

Asian elephants are the “kings of math” in the animal world. According to Japanese scientists, Asian elephants’ understanding of numbers is close to that of humans. When looking at a picture of several watermelons, the animal can count the right number of melons most of the time. The size of the fruit and the distance (距离) between each fruit doesn’t affect (影响) their ability to count.

Living in a sea of books

家里多放书有什么好处?

Growing up in a home full of books is good for you. Now science says it is really true. According to researchers from Australian National University, people who grow up with books at home are better at reading and communicating with others. But how many books are enough to make a difference? The magic number seems to be 80 or above.

The giant is disappearing

世界“最大生物”正在消失。

Pando is a group of 47,000 aspen trees (白杨树) in the US. It is the largest organism (有机体) on Earth. But scientists from Utah State University have found that the giant is shrinking (缩减). The main reason for this is that animals such as mule deer (骡鹿) and cattle are eating the younger trees, while the older trees are dying off. Building fences (栅栏) might save some of the trees.
