JUST ASK | 成长不烦恼

本文作者: DALE FOX
Q

My desk mate loves doing sports but doesn’t usually have a bath. What should I say to him? Rebecca

A

Dear Rebecca,

Thinking of other people’s feelings is really important, especially when it comes to those you spend a lot of time with.

So, your desk mate really should consider that how he smells might affect the people around him.

That said, however, he might not be aware (意识到) that he smells bad. Quite often, we aren’t aware of our own smell - even if it’s bad.

Just think about how many times you’ve met someone in an elevator who smells of garlic (大蒜). If they knew how bad they smelled, they’d probably take the stairs instead.

When it comes to the smells we produce, our nose quickly gets used to them and “ignores” them.

Even if we wear perfume (香水), our nose gets used to the smell. Sadly, these rules don’t seem to apply to the smells of others.

With this in mind, the best way to solve your problem would be to talk to your desk mate about your problem.

However, you should be careful not to hurt his feelings. Don’t be too direct with him. Instead, you could say something like, “There’s a bad smell around here. Can you smell it?”

On the other hand, if he is aware of how he smells, you could be more direct with him.

Whichever approach (方式) you choose, don’t feel bad about trying to solve your problem.

Like everything in life, you should stand up for what you believe in – and stand against smells you can’t stand. Dale
