Q
Dear Dale,
I participated (参与) in my school’s singing competition last week, but I failed because I sang out of tune. Now I’m really upset since my hard work didn’t pay off and I let my friends down. Could you help me?

A
Dear Eric Hiccup,
It’s normal to feel disappointed (失落的) when we don’t perform as well as we expected to. When we work really hard to be perfect at something, we feel awful when we make a mistake.
However, when things don’t go our way, there are two choices to make. The first choice is the easiest one. We can give in to our negative (负面的) feelings and continue to feel bad about ourselves.
This choice is the easiest because it requires (要求) no work. It’s not difficult to feel sorry for ourselves while we think about what we did wrong. Eventually, we forget about our problem and it goes away - yet, we learn nothing from our experience.
The second choice is the difficult one. But like everything that’s good for us, it’s worth the hard work.
Instead of feeling down, we can learn from our mistakes and use them to improve ourselves.
If you believe you sang out of tune, then take this as a lesson that you need more practice.
Performing in front of a crowd is always really difficult. So, perhaps you could volunteer to do more activities that require doing this. For example, you could become a member of an English speaking group, if your school has one.
That way, you’d soon become more comfortable being in front of large groups of people.
When life presents us with failures, turning those failures into something positive is always the best solution.
And eventually, in your case, working even harder will allow you to get back on that stage and show everyone just how great a singer you really are.Dale
