Q
Dear Dale,
My home is far from school so I have to live on campus this semester. I always feel homesick. I miss my parents and don’t want to live with strangers. Can you help me?
Lulu

Dear Lulu,
Being away from our family is really hard, especially when we’re young. At times, it can feel like we’re all alone in the world.
What you have to remember, however, is that we all have to make sacrifices (牺牲) sometimes. In your case, your sacrifice is spending time apart from your family.
What you get in return, though, is an education - something that many people in the world aren’t lucky enough to get.
It’s difficult when we really miss our family but there’s no easy way for us to get to them. I know this personally as I live in China but I’m from the UK.
However, every time I feel homesick, I just think about how special it feels every time I finally get to see my family.
In the meantime, I concentrate (集中精力) on working as hard as I can and spending time with my friends.
If you want to make yourself happy and try to forget about your problems, having friends is the easiest way to do this.
When you’re not busy with your schoolwork, a good friend will be there to take your mind off your family.
And if there are students in your school who are also living on campus away from their family, they will know exactly how you feel.
Take the first step toward making a new friend, and you’ll also take the first step toward solving the problem of homesickness.
Dale
