Q
Dear Daniel,
Every time I make a public speech or even answer a question in class, I feel so nervous that I can’t speak fluently. I care about what others think. What should I do? Kaelyn
A
Dear Kaelyn,
I know exactly how you feel. I’m the singer in a band. Before our first performance, I was so nervous that I wanted to vomit (呕吐). I’d never sung in public before - not even karaoke!
When we started, everyone was looking at me, and I forgot the first words of our first song. I wanted to die from embarrassment. After a moment, I remembered the words and the rest of the show went okay, but I was nervous for the next performance!
So I practiced more. I also kept performing. Now, years later, I still make a mistake sometimes, but I don’t get nervous anymore. People usually forget the mistakes. They are just happy to hear music.
My point is that you’re young and you need practice. You need “repetitions” like lifting weights at the gym. More repetitions mean more muscles. Your brain is like a muscle. Give your brain more repetitions. Raise your hand more. Talk more. Give more speeches.
Yes, you will make mistakes. That’s part of life. Nobody sits at a piano and plays Mozart perfectly on the first try. Not even a piano genius (天才).
Of course, mistakes are only useful if you can use them to understand how you can improve. A wise person learns from his mistakes.
And if anyone judges or laughs at you, remember this: They are too cowardly (胆小的) to even try. Daniel
