Q
Dear Daniel,
I’m struggling with laziness these days. Every time I’m reminded that I should exercise more, I find many different excuses, such as bad weather or having too much homework. I realize that this is a bad habit, but it is very hard to change. Do you have any suggestions?
Judy
A
Dear Judy,
You’re not alone. I fight this battle every day. So does everyone over 30. I recently visited some of my old college friends. They were all so fat that I couldn’t recognize them at first.
My brother – annoyingly fit and handsome – once said, “It’s easier to stay in shape than to get into shape.”
Don’t be like me and my flabby (肥胖的) friends. Start good habits now, while you’re still young.
Maybe you’re like me. I HATE the gym. Treadmills (跑步机) are the worst. We’re humans, not hamsters!
Try to find fun ways to exercise. Play a game or a team sport, something you enjoy. Would you rather run like a fat hamster when you’re 40, or run around kicking balls with your friends?
If team sports aren’t for you, try a solo (个人的) sport, like hiking or cycling. You can make goals and work toward them. My friend has a checklist of mountains. He hikes almost every week. He doesn’t think of it as exercise. He thinks of it as adventure. Enjoyment is important.
I used to play sports to stay fit. Now I work out with my friend. He has some equipment and knows many good exercises. Unfortunately, he’s as lazy as you and me. Exercising together creates some peer pressure (同伴压力) to continue. It works well!
The best part was when someone complimented (赞扬) me on social media. It’s great motivation (动力).
But you have to make the choice and then stick with it. You’ll be proud of yourself. I promise. Daniel
