Q
Dear Daniel,
My friend owes (欠) me money. But he always finds excuses not to return it. It has been three months and he hasn’t paid me back. What should I do?
Justin
A
Dear Justin,
It’s tough to say no to your friends, but mixing money with friendship is always risky (有风险的). If something goes wrong, you lose both the money and the friend. It sounds like you’re learning this lesson the hard way.
Was it less than 100 yuan? If so, forget the money. Keep the friend, but don’t forget the lesson.
Was it more than 100 yuan? Do you want to continue your friendship? The next time you both visit a restaurant, internet cafe or bookstore, ask him to pay for you. If he refuses, politely remind him of his debt. My friends and I do this every day. It’s not perfect and you might lose some of the money, but it’s fair enough.
If he still refuses, you need to rethink your friendship. You also need to bring in “the big guns (武器)”. It’s time to get parents involved. But first: Did you lend him cash or did you send him money electronically (电子地), through WeChat? If you sent it electronically, find the record of the transaction (交易).
Show the evidence to your parents. They will likely contact his parents, and it will be out of your hands. If you are afraid to tell your parents, show your evidence to a teacher or another adult whom you trust.
If you have no record of lending the money, you’ve learned another lesson about money: “Always get it in writing.”
I hope you get your money back. Otherwise, you paid the price for a life lesson. Daniel
