Q
Dear Daniel,
I’m one of the English representatives (课代表) in my class. We are preparing a performance for our English Festival, which is a yearly event. But there are not enough actors, so my teacher wants me to act in the performance. But I want to focus on my studies. My teacher keeps pressuring me and asking me why I won’t act. What should I do?
Marvin

Dear Marvin
This is tough (困难的). Other things are more important to you, but if you don’t participate (参与), the event may not happen.
It’s hard to say “no” to people, especially teachers. I think young people should learn how to say “no”. I am 36 and I am still bad at it! I sincerely admire this about you.
If you really don’t want to join, say, “I’m sorry but this performance is not my top priority (优先). I can’t give it my best effort. You should find someone else.” This is assertive (坚定的), but also ethical (合乎道德规范的).
However, I think you should try to make time. First, you will help your teacher and your school community. Second, you might enjoy yourself. Third, how much time do you spend playing games on your phone?
“But Daniel, you’re saying, ‘Colleges don’t care about English festivals. I need to study.’” You’re right. They don’t!
But colleges do care about: 1. Community participation; 2. Using English outside the classroom; and 3. Leadership.
Your teacher doesn’t have enough people. You are the English representative. Take charge of the situation. Then put it on your resume (简历). Daniel
