Q
Dear Daniel,
I am not good at keeping things organized. My desk is usually a mess, and I lose things all the time. I really want to work on my organizational skills (整理能力). Do you have any organization tips to share?
Amy
A
Dear Amy,
You are not alone. Do you know who else is bad at organizing? Most people. Even CEOs and presidents. The only difference between them and you is that they have teams of people managing every detail (细节) of their lives.
Don’t judge yourself. I am also a disorganized person. We, the slobs (懒汉) of the world, must stand together. I can’t help you organize, but I can help you be a successful slob.
First, gather (收集) everything that’s really important. I’m talking about passports, birth certificates (出生证明), love letters, hate letters, photos of your friends and family – you get the idea. Keep them together in one place. I keep all of mine in a fireproof (防火的) box.
Next, a successful slob knows her mess. A co-worker once did me the “favor” of cleaning my desk. It was a disaster. I couldn’t find anything. I knew my mess. Do you know yours?
Of course, there’s a difference between “messy (凌乱的)” and “dirty”. “Messy” just means you have stuff everywhere. “Dirty” means you’re growing bacteria (细菌). Don’t be dirty. Put garbage away. Put dishes in the sink (水槽) – immediately.
Most things can be put away quickly. A good rule to follow is: “If you can do it in two minutes, do it now.” This way, your mess will never get too big.
Slobs, unite!
Daniel
