Q
Dear Daniel,
I’m lacking enthusiasm (热情) for everything except reading. Recently, I found that my peers consider me a social anomaly (反常的人) and talk badly about me. I’m really not into chatting with others, but I don’t want to hear trash either. What should I do? Alex

Dear Alex,
Your letter concerns (使担心) me deeply. You say you don’t have interest in anything. You’re not a “social anomaly”. Modern life makes many people that way. I have felt that way too, especially when I was your age. Sometimes I still get this feeling. When I feel this way, I start unhealthy habits: I eat junk food; I avoid people and exercise; and I play with my phone too much.
Speaking of unhealthy habits, let’s talk about your reading. Reading is great, but if that is all you do, it’s socially isolating (孤立的). My best friend in high school fought depression (抑郁) from the age of 15 – he spent a lot of time reading alone. He never really got the help he needed. He died last year at age 35 from his own unhealthy habits.
It sounds like your friends are concerned about you, but they talk badly because they don’t understand. Ignore them.
Instead, I urge you to talk to your parents. Tell them how you feel. If you can’t tell them, or they don’t seem concerned, talk to another family member. Talk to a teacher – any adult that you trust. If nobody will listen, find counseling (咨询) on your own.
In the meantime, you need to take some control. Put down your books and your smart phone. Go enjoy the nice weather before winter starts. Start a new hobby. Being in nature, playing sports and being creative all have real and positive (积极的) effects on our well-being (安康).
Who knows? Maybe that’s all you need!
Daniel
