Ancient scarf stands for women’s strength

本文作者: TEENS

女性为何被称为“巾帼”?

Q: Why do we call women jinguo (巾帼) in Chinese?

A: Jinguo is a kind of scarf in ancient China. Women would often wrap (包裹) their hair up in it. During the Three Kingdoms period (220-280), the famous statesman (政治家) Zhuge Liang started a war (战争) against the Kingdom of Wei. The Wei general (将军) Sima Yi didn’t want to fight. He asked his army (军队) to stay in the city. Zhuge thought Sima was scared, so he sent a woman’s scarf to Sima to make fun of him. He was saying that Sima was as timid (胆小的) as a little girl.
