In 1986, an explosion occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in modern-day Ukraine, which was considered the worst nuclear disaster in history. Five years later, scientists found a kind of radiation-eating fungi (真菌) – named cryptococcus neoformans – thriving inside the abandoned power plant. But it wasn’t until recently that scientists suggested a possibly revolutionary implication for these little organisms.
