Astronauts exercise in space to prevent boredom. TUCHONG

Passing time in space

宇航员如何在太空打发时间。

Venturing (探索) into space, astronauts are burdened with serious tasks. However, just like everyone else, they need a break sometimes. So what do they do to make the time pass? According to Popular Science, astronauts at the International Space Station have 2.5 hours of gym time, doing simple exercises like deep squats (深蹲) and stretches (拉伸). NASA also sends up items for recreation (娱乐), like guitars, keyboards and even a chess set outfitted (配有) with Velcro (尼龙搭扣) to keep the pieces from floating away. The agency is also looking into virtual reality. Maybe one day, interplanetary (行星间的) travelers can spend an afternoon at the “beach” thanks to this cutting-edge technology.
