Cultural background: tipping culture
Although it is not a custom to tip (给小费) in China, in countries like the US and Canada, it is common for people to tip about 15 to 20 percent of the bill to a waiter or waitress when they eat in a restaurant because they get paid below the minimum wage (最低工资) and work for tips to make up for that. Hotel maids (酒店女服务员), hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips.
