The novel coronavirus is much tougher than people thought. A new study by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia shows that it can last up to 28 days on surfaces such as mobile phone and ATM screens. However, when it comes to softer surfaces such as cotton cloth, it lasts for much less time. Scientists tested the virus on banknotes (纸币), steel, glass and cotton cloth. It lasted as long as 28 days at 20 C on glass, steel and banknotes. But as the temperature increased to 30 C and 40 C, the virus lasted for less than a week on those surfaces. The study also found that the virus began losing potency (效力) after six to seven days on most surfaces.
