Chinese comedy has lost a legend. On Feb 27, Hong Kong actor Ng Man-tat (吴孟达) died of liver cancer at age 70. Ng is best known for his “golden supporting role” collaborations with Stephen Chow (周星驰) in many comedy works including Fight Back to School (《逃学威龙》) , Hail the Judge (《九品芝麻官》) and Shaolin Soccer (《少林足球》), which “epitomized the mo lei tau (无厘头) slapstick (闹剧) style of Hong Kong humor”, The Hollywood Reporter noted. In a variety show that aired in February, Ng said, “If I’m not dead and he [Chow] has yet to retire, there would be a chance to work together again.” Now fans have lost the chance to see the pair onscreen one last time.
