The closely-watched torch relay for the Tokyo Olympics began in a low-key way on March 25. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the opening ceremony at northeastern Fukushima prefecture (县) was closed to the public. Organizers also reduced the number of participants and simplified the program. As the torch passes, fans are told to social-distance and not to cheer loudly. The relay will take 121 days, ending in Tokyo on July 23.
