Tennis stars stole the show at the 2021 Laureus World Sports Awards held on May 6. Both Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka bagged Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards. The Spanish tennis legend Nadal, 35, won the fourth Laureus award. Nadal was recognized for his 13th French Open, which equaled Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slam (大满贯) men’s titles. “It was his 100th win at Roland Garros [where the French Open is held], losing only two matches in 16 years,” the organizer said in a statement. Japan’s Osaka, who won the US Open for the second time and claimed (获得) four majors, is now a two-time Laureus winner. But she was not only recognized for her professional (职业的) success as “the first Asian player to have reached world No 1”, but also for “her activism (行动主义) on Black Lives Matter”, according to the Laureus website.
