Learn two languages and think longer

最新研究表明使用双语可减缓脑部机能衰退

Bilingual (two language)speakers are better able to deal with distractions than those who speak only a single language. And that may help offset age-related decline in mental performance, a recent study has shown.

In studies which were conducted in Canada, India and Hong Kong, psychologists found that individuals who spoke two languages with equal proficiency did better than monolingual (single language) volunteers. Researchers used a test to measure mental ability that is known to decline with age. The tests measured how quickly they could perform while being distracted.

The researchers also said that "Bilingualism appears to offset age-related losses" of certain mental processes. Test takers were quickly shown a red or blue square on a computer screen. They were told to press one or the other of two "shift" keys depending on which colour appeared.

The team, led by Ellen Bialystok at York University,Canada, guessed the ability to hold two languages in the mind at the same time, without allowing words and grammar from one to slip into the other, might account for the greater control to perform well on the specific test.
