English Language students appear to be making quite different choices about where to study.
Australia is attracting more foreign students than ever before, according to the Strait Times, with a 10 per cent stake in the global English language education market compared with Britain's 25 per cent. Over the last few years the number of international students heading to Australia has more than doubled from 49,000 in 1997.
Meanwhile, the number of study weeks by foreign students choosing Britain has increased by 5 per cent over the last year, up from 1,063,096 weeks studying at English UK member programmes in 2002. Japan, China and South Korea provided nearly a third of all students.
And the overall situation for the global ELT industry is cheery, according to the Strait Times. The number of foreign students enrolled in English language courses around the world will increase from one million to 2.6 million by 2020.
New Zealand, once a popular choice, is having a hard time. The number of foreign students at English language schools has fallen by more than 20,000 in less than a year. According to the New Zealand Statistics Department, there were 50,594 people learning the language in the year to the end of March. For the same period from 2002 to 2003, that figure peaked at 71,503.
