Ding Liren (L), 30, won China’s first men’s world chess title on April 30. He defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in a tiebreaker (决胜局) at the 2023 International Chess Federation World Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan. Ding’s victory means that China now holds both the men’s and women’s world titles. The current women’s champion is Ju Wenjun. Ding’s win was celebrated by people across the country.
