A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Gansu and Qinghai just before midnight on Dec 18. Apart from bringing down buildings, the quake triggered (引发) a sand boil (砂涌) in several villages in Qinghai. The mud was about 2 to 3 meters deep, covering nearly 60,000 square meters.
