A live-action movie of Popeye the Sailor Man (《大力水手》) is currently in development as a big-budget feature, reported Movieguide. This is the character’s first big screen appearance since the 1980 movie starring Robin Williams as the iconic sailor. First debuting in a 1929 comic strip, the character celebrated its 95th anniversary this year. Popeye “spawned (催生) both animated features and series in his heyday (鼎盛时期), and could be one of the earliest templates (样板) for mass merchandising across multiple generations,” Variety noted.
