The University of Hong Kong(HKU)admitted over 1,200 first-year students from outside Hong Kong this autumn, marking a 50% increase from the previous academic year, with about half of the new intake coming from the Chinese mainland. In an effort to transform Hong Kong into a global hub for higher education, the government doubled the quota for non-local students at publicly funded universities from 20% to 40% this year. Non-local enrollment rose from approximately 800 students in 2023, with the proportion of Chinese mainland students remaining consistent.
