Top Chinese universities are doing very well in some academic (学术的) areas, according to the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject. The Chinese mainland universities ranked third globally with 1,230 subjects listed,  just behind the US and the UK. Peking University ranked highly in linguistics (语言学), classics (古典文学) and ancient history, while Tsinghua University did well in art history and environmental sciences. In general, Chinese universities are improving, with 60 percent of subjects moving up in the rankings. Nine percent stayed the same as last year, and 358 new subjects were added to the list.
