Gold prices hit a record high above $3,245 (about 23,724 yuan) per ounce (about 28.35 grams) on April 14, according to Bloomberg. The price of the precious metal has gone up more than 20 percent so far this year. Experts believe this sudden rise is mainly caused by concerns over US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, reported NPR. People are worried that the tariffs could raise prices, create uncertainty for businesses and increase the risk of a US recession (经济衰退). As a result, more people are rushing to buy gold, since it keeps its value during times of economic trouble. This growing demand has pushed gold prices even higher than before.
