THE 35th Annual International Bilingual/Multicultural Education Conference will be held January 18 to 21, 2006, in Phoenix, Arizona, US. The theme of the conference is "Connecting Worlds with Bilingual Education". It is organized by the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) of the United States.
NABE is the only professional organization at the national level wholly devoted to representing both English language learners and bilingual education professionals. Along with its affiliate organizations in 23 states, the association represents a combined membership of more than 20,000 bilingual and English-as-a-second-language teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, university professors and students, researchers, advocates, policy-makers and parents.
The four-day conference will feature up to 7,000 participants; internationally renowned keynote and featured speakers; more than 500 featured and concurrent sessions and a major product exhibition and job fair. Attending the conference will increase expertise in areas such as: helping students develop English language skills; using and developing a student's native language; teaching math, science, social studies and other content areas to single and multiple language groups; recruiting and developing bilingual education personnel; implementing educational reforms; evaluating programmes for English language learners; designing early childhood, elementary, secondary and adult/vocational education programmes for culturally and linguistically diverse students; choosing and using instructional technology and the Internet.
The keynote and featured speakers include Stephen Krashen, University of Southern California; Jim Cummins, University of Toronto; Lily Wong Fillmore, University of California; Fay Shin, California State University; Donaldo Macedo, University of Massachusetts; Joseph Lo Bianco, University of Melbourne; David Freeman and Yvonne Freeman, University of Texas, etc.
