THE 41st The Regional Language Centre (RELC) International Seminar will be held April 24 to 26, 2006, in Singapore. The topic of the conference is "Teacher Education in Language Teaching".
The conference aims to examine different approaches to training; to look at how far training can improve an individual's teaching and to consider whether there is one particular training approach that can suit all teachers. The topic areas include: the history of language teacher training; training within the region and beyond; pre-service versus in-service training; similarities and differences in training first language, second language and foreign language teachers; language skills versus teaching skills; nature versus nurture; the effect of training on teaching and the professionalism of the teaching profession. The invited speakers are Choong Kam Foong, Malaysia; Tom Farrell, Canada; Jeremy Harmer, United Kingdom; Allan Luke, Singapore; Jack Richards, Australia; Amy Tsui, Hong Kong; Cynthia White, New Zealand; Peter Martin, United Kingdom; Datin Hjh Rosnah Hj Ramly, Brunei; Danilo Dayag, Philippines.
RELC, an educational project of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), is located in Singapore. Its main objective is to provide constructive direction to the forces and the challenges of change in the contemporary world through joint and cooperative efforts for regional educational development.
RELC was set up in 1968 to provide assistance to SEAMEO member countries in the area of language education. To achieve its purpose, the Centre conducts advanced training courses and undertakes research, publications and information dissemination, and other activities related to the linguistic needs and problems of Southeast Asia.
The RELC International Seminar is a major event in language education in the region. It is held annually and is attended by 500 participantsmainly scholars, lecturers, curriculum developers and educationists from the region as well as from other parts of the world.
