  Academy Awards (Oscar)

  奥斯卡金像奖

EVERY January, when we face a new year, the attention of the entertainment community and of film fans around the world begins to focus on the upcoming Academy Awards. Oscar Fever hits, building to a peak at the annual presentation of the golden statues, when hundreds of millions of cinema lovers glue themselves to their television sets to find out who will receive filmmaking's highest honour.

The annual Oscar presentation has been held since 1929. After three-quarters of a century of recognizing excellence in cinema, the annual presentation of the Oscars has become the most famous activity of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

How Oscar received his nickname is not exactly clear. The most popular story is that Margaret Herrick, an Academy employee and eventual executive director, remarked that the statuette resembled her Uncle Oscar, and the Academy staff began to refer to it by that name. Although journalists used the nickname with increasing frequency during the late 1930s, the Academy did not officially use the name Oscar until 1939.

  Venice International Film Festival

  威尼斯国际电影节

THE Venice International Film Festival is one of the oldest festival in the world. It was first held in 1932, and takes place every year in late August or early September in Venice, Italy. The International film competition for full-length feature films is judged by an International Jury composed of from seven to nine representatives from the world of cinema and the arts in general, each from a different country.

Awards include the Golden Lion for Best Film, Jury Grand Prix, Special Prize for Best Director, Prize for Best Script. There are several non-competitive sections in the festival, including Critics' Week, selected by the National Association of Italian Film Critics, and New Territories for films and audio or visual materials employing a multiplicity of media and forms of expression. Films selected for Window on Images examine the language of cinema, the story-telling process and the use of new technologies.

  Cannes Film Festival

  戛纳电影节

IN the world of film, the Festival de Cannes known to us in English as the Cannes Film Festival is one of the largest international showcases of cinematic art. Every year, for 12 days in May, the small city of Cannes in southern France turns into a meeting place for cinema's players, would-be players and the people who report on them.

This is an intense meeting of art, stardom and finance. Cannes is the No.1 international market for first-time films, and multi-million dollar deals are signed there every year. It attracts in the neighbourhood of 27,000 film industry representatives and countless tourists.

Thousands of films are submitted to the Cannes Film Festival every year, and only about 50 feature films and 30 short films are included in the Official Selection, the main body of work that is the centre of the festival. Several more are shown as opening and closing films and during the "sidebar" screenings of the Directors' Fortnight and International Critics' Week.

The most prestigious award given out at Cannes is the Palme d'Or for the best film. The jury of the festival grants other awards, including the Grand Prix the second most prestigious award.

  Berlin International Film Festival

  柏林国际电影节

THE Berlin International Film Festival has been held every February ever since 1951. It's also one of the largest film festivals in the world. For two weeks art, glamour, parties and business all interweave in the heart of Berlin, centering on Potsdamer Platz. Each year, some 400,000 filmgoers and 16,500 trade visitors attend film stars, film producers, distributors, buyers, financers and journalists. Each Berlin International Film Festival climaxes with the international jury awarding the "Bears", the main prizes. Films from all over the globe vie for the award and a world premiere in Berlin.

Alongside the competition, the Berlin International Film Festival features a fest of children's films, a forum on German film, and an international forum on young film. The festival also includes both a retrospective and an homage to the oeuvre of an outstanding person in film.
