IN 1914, Pierre de Coubertin(顾拜旦) wanted to design a flag and a symbol(象征)to represent the Olympic Spirit. As the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Coubertin chose a five-ring symbol as his design. He got the idea from a stone discovered at Delphi, Greece(希腊德尔菲). The Paris Congress in 1914 used it as the official(官方的)flag of the Olympics. The new flag appeared at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp,Belgium(比利时安特卫普)for the first time. It was here that the five rings became the official Olympic symbol.
The Olympic symbol's five rings come in five different colors. From left to right, they are blue, yellow, black, green and red. The rings are linked from left to right; the blue, black and red rings are placed at the top, the yellow and green rings at the bottom. The five-ring symbol means the five continents(大洲) of the world. It also represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from around the world.
