Native English teachers increased in S. Korea
韩国以英语为母语的外籍教师人数增加
ACCORDING to the South Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, 3,808 native English speakers were teaching at South Korean elementary and secondary schools as of September 2007, which marked a nearly double-fold gain from 1,909 in 2006. Among them, about 1,400 were teaching at middle schools. The Ministry is planning to increase the number up to 1,850 by the end of this year, further to 2,400 by 2009 and to 2,900 by 2010.
Australian gov’t helps with English teaching
澳大利亚政府拨款资助移民英语教学
THE Australian government is planning to provide A$50 million (US$45 million) funding to boost English language courses for immigrants to help them pass the Australian citizenship test, which requires them to show adequate competency in English. Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria chairman Sam Afra said prospective citizens with low-level English should be allowed to take classes before sitting the test.
