US funding up for language study
美国加大2009年语言项目财政预算投入
US President George W. Bush’s budget for the 2009 fiscal year will allocate further funding to encourage foreign-language study for national-security purposes. The budget estimates that the US government will spend $59 million in 2009 on the National Security Language Initiative, more than double the planned spending of $26 million in the 2008 fiscal year. These languages include Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Farsi, Hindi and Russian.
UK employers to pay to teach staff English
英国计划要求雇主为移民员工支付英语培训费用
UK employers who hire immigrant workers will be told to pay to teach their staff English under new plans being drawn up in the UK government. The move comes after government immigration advisors argued that companies should bear more of the costs of a 75 percent rise in foreign workers, mainly from Eastern Europe, in the past six years.
