Japan to promote primary school English teaching 日本拟全面推进小学英语语言教育 JAPAN’S local education boards have decided to make English education compulsory for fifth- and sixth-graders in primary schools in 2011. Under the revised curriculum, students in both grades will take 35 45-minute lessons per year, primarily focusing on communicative skills such as speaking and listening, with no lessons in reading and writing. The students will not be graded for the classes.
