South Koreans face English cost burden
韩国英语课外辅导费用涨幅明显
ACCORDING to a survey of 34,000 parents by the South Korean National Statistical Office, private spending on English instruction is a major burden. Individual spending on English jumped 11.8 percent to 76,000 won ($57) per month last year from a year before. The increase is attributed to English education fever and to higher fees charged by hagwon (a sort of school where students go for extra study). “The government policy to strengthen English education at schools is partly to blame for the rise in the English education spending,” said Yang Sung-gwang, a director of the Education Ministry's Human Policy Department.
Early English helps children learn French
研究发现儿童早期语言知识有助于外语习得
CHILDREN who learn English first find it easier to learn French later, a study has found. Moreover, reversing the learning order will probably have the same effect. The study, “Early English — excessive demand or opportunity?”, was carried out by experts from the Central Switzerland University of Teacher Education. It was shown that children benefited from their previous language knowledge when it came to learning a new language. The study also showed that monolingual children were less motivated to learn a new language than those who were multilingual.
