Every person learning a new language wants a patient native-speaker friend who will politely correct their mistakes and teach them new vocabulary. But native speakers can be hard to find. If you're having trouble finding one, American sitcoms (情景喜剧) are one way to improve your language ability. Such shows are rich mines of information about American culture. They also offer useful language instruction. Watching them will help you expand your vocabulary and teach you correct language usage in different situations. Best of all, sitcoms are a fun way to learn.

To help you get the most out of watching US TV shows, we have put together the following useful guide.

Before watching

Gather a group of friends before you sit down to watch a movie or a TV show. This will make it easier for you to practice some of the English words and expressions you hear. To aid your conversations, find out as much information as you can about the movie or TV show's basic plot, characters, actors, director and awards. Be sure to have all of your discussions in English.

While watching

You might need to watch an episode, or certain scenes of a drama, a couple of times. This will depend on your level of English, and on the complexity of the drama. For a complicated show, watch it in English with Chinese subtitles (字幕) first. This will help you get the themes and plot. When you're done, start thinking about issues to discuss with your friends.

Then, a couple of days later, watch the piece again — this time with subtitles in English. Focus on the language. As you are watching, write down at least 10 new words and 5 phrases or expressions. Guess their meaning. Later, check your guess by looking up the words and expressions in a dictionary, or by asking a native English speaker. Remember, some of the language will likely not be found in your textbooks! Be careful about how you use the words!

Next, watch the piece a third time, in English only, without subtitles. If you have fully mastered the meaning, lip-synch (对口型) the dialogues from the script with the actors. Try to memorize and act out your favorite scenes.

Finally, you must take responsibility for your own learning. Let watching movies and TV series teach you about life in other countries and help improve your knowledge of English.

B. understand themes and plots—use helpful subtitles—learn by heart—use what you learn

Where did the skateboarder style come from? If you want the answer, you should check out the film Lords of Dogtown. The movie tells the true story of the first great skateboarders, and how they changed skateboarding from a simple way to relax into one of the world's most popular sports.

In the 1970s, most people thought that skateboarding was just a fashion that would be popular for a while and then go away. They probably would have been right if it hadn't been for a group of surfers from Venice, California called the Z-Boys. These boys, Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Jay Adams are boys who don't fit in. They have no special skills except for surfing and skateboarding. Even other surfers don't accept them. Then something happens. The owner of the surf shop where the boys hang out invents a new type of skateboard that can grip (不打滑) the pavement (人行道). Skateboarding becomes very popular. The Z-boys spend the summer practicing tricks in empty swimming pools, and soon become celebrities (明 星) for their skills.

The movie follows the Z-boys as they go from being nobodies to “The lords of Dogtown”. Unfortunately the fame that skateboarding brings them finally tears the group of friends apart. The film tells their story for better and for worse, and shows the audience how skateboarding and the skateboarding style was born.

C. without the group of Z-boys, it is obvious that skateboarding will still be a popular sport now

This is an interview with a British author who has written some very popular books about a boy with magical powers who goes to school in a castle.

No, not that British author. In fact, Jenny Nimmo, author of the Charlie Bone series, hasn't even read the books about that other magical boy, Harry what's-his-name. But her editors made her change some things in her stories because of similarities between the two.

“I had a maze (迷宫) in one of my books . . . and my editor called me up and said I had to take it out because there was a maze in one of the Harry Potter books. I was a bit put out because Charlie was certainly in my mind before Harry Potter.”

Nimmo has just finished “Charlie Bone and the Hidden King,” the last of the five-book series that takes Charlie, his magically talented schoolmates and some amazing animals in search of Charlie's father. Nimmo talked with us about how she came up with the idea for Charlie and whether this is really the end of his story.

Q: Where did the idea for Charlie Bone come from?

A: I was considering writing a book for a long time. My own kids always wanted me to write about the boarding school I went to. It was a dark, horrible place. I was only 6 when I was sent there. I don't think I was ready to write it until my own children went to college. . . . I wanted a hero who was not completely magical but had one talent. I have a dyslexic (诵读困难的) son, and I thought it was always important for him to have the sense of having a talent.

Q: How did you come up with the talents the children have in the books?

A: I always wanted to be able to talk to people in photographs, so that's where Charlie's talent comes from. . . . A child at a school I was visiting once said to me, ‘Wouldn't it be great to bring storms?' So that's where Tancred's talent came from. People have brilliant talents, but not everyone uses them for good.

Q: The names of your characters are so vivid —Gabriel Silk, Lysander Sage, Billy Raven. Where do you get them?

A: I love names. I keep a great black book of names. If I meet someone with a great name, I put it in my book. . . . I came up with Charlie's name because there was this great dog named Charlie in the town where I would go visit my mother [in a retirement home]. . . . He had a bone that he would keep picking up and dropping. It made us all laugh. I had been looking for my hero's name, and there it was: Charlie Bone.”

Q: Is this really the last Charlie Bone book?

A: I had always intended there to be five. I knew exactly what would happen in the fifth book. [We could tell you what she said here, but we'd be giving away a BIG secret.] I was about halfway through the last book when my publisher called and said, ‘Are you sure there aren't any more you want to write?'

So I decided to write a trilogy (三部曲). Charlie will be in it . . . but the characters of the ‘bad children' are going to be explored a bit more. So you don't have to say goodbye to Charlie if you don't want to. But everything does get resolved [at the end of ‘Hidden King'].

1. The purpose of the passage is _______.

A. to provide a study guide for understanding a famous literary figure

B. to introduce an author whose works are similar to those of a more famous author

C. to tell us about the content of a series of books that involve a boy with magical powers

D. to explain why books about young people with magical powers are appealing to children

2. What does the author Jenny Nimmo say inspired her to create stories about Charlie Bone?

A. To share the adventures of her own childhood.

B. To get herself over the sorrow of losing her own father.

C. To provide her own son with a sense that having even one talent is positive.

D. To help people realize they should use their talents for good.

3. What “love” does the author share during the interview?

A. Love of people. B. Love of dogs.

Tips to get you there

Planning your holiday? Whether you're going to Yunnan or UK it's important to make sure you're well-prepared. Here's a handy checklist to help you.

Location

The first thing you have to decide is where you want to go. Of course a lot will depend on your time and budget. However, even if you're staying closer to home, it doesn't mean that there isn't plenty to see. Choose what sort of holiday you're looking for. Do you want to relax on a beach, visit some famous landmarks, or hike through some beautiful scenery? All these things are available in China, but if your budget stretches, why not look at somewhere else in Asia, or even farther. Check online to discover new places and to get an idea of how much everything will cost.

Packing

There can be such a thing as being over prepared when traveling, but you don't want to forget something important. It can be a good idea to wear pants with zipped (有拉链的) pockets. In certain countries local thieves will target unsuspecting tourists for their money. It can also be worth packing some basic medical supplies. If you are going to be moving around a lot, buy a good backpack. Leave some space in it too, so you can fill it up with souvenirs (纪念品) on the way home. Finally, remember to pack clothes that are going to be suitable for the weather.

Accommodation

There are several things to consider when picking where you want to stay. Location is often the most important. No one wants to be stuck miles from the action. When staying in hostels (青年旅社), it is often a good idea to book your first night in a new city. After all, you will not be familiar with the surroundings and will want somewhere to leave your luggage. However, don't commit to more than a couple of days at the same hostel. When you get to a new place, you might soon discover there's somewhere better to stay.

Don't forget

The key to a good holiday is detail. When you're traveling, especially in a foreign country, always be prepared. Don't forget to change some money before you leave — you might not be able to do so when you arrive. If you're traveling somewhere tropical (热带的), you might need some injections (注射剂) or pills (药片) to avoid disease. And it's always worth taking out travel insurance, just in case you find yourself in a spot of bother during the trip. Don't forget to check the exchange rates. The strong yuan has made traveling abroad cheaper recently. It can also be a good idea to write down the phone number of the closest Chinese embassy, in case you need help while abroad.

1. When you decide where to spend your holiday, you have to consider all the following EXCEPT ______.

A. time B. money C. purpose D. weather

2. Pants with zipped pockets are recommended because _______.

A. you'll carry a lot of small things with you

B. you'll be expected to buy a lot of souvenirs

C. this will help you guard against local thieves

D. it's a good measure in case of emergencies

3. As to accommodation, the writer's suggestion is _______.

A. to stay away from the downtown areas to get cheap places

B. better not to leave your luggage in unfamiliar hostels

C. to book at most two nights in the same hostel in case you don't like it

D. choose your location after you arrive at your destination

4. In the last part, the writer reminds us ________.

A. to choose the most suitable kind of travel insurance

B. to use RMB in foreign countries since the yuan is strong

C. to check the exchange rates so as to decide what currency to buy

D. to contact Chinese embassy in case we need help when abroad
