William Shakespeare was a writer of plays and poems. Two of his most famous plays are Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. He was born in 1564 in England.

At school he liked watching plays. He decided to be an actor when he finished school at the age of fourteen. He married in 1582 and had three children.

At twenty-eight he moved to London and joined a

theatre company. He became a successful actor and started writing plays. But we know very little about William Shakespeare the man. One thing we can be certain about is that his writing was different to anything that had come before. In the 16th and early 17th centuries, theater was all about entertaining (娱乐) the audience – so the plays of the time were often full of blood and painful deaths.

To this action, Shakespeare added an understanding of human nature. His characters are complicated (复杂的), but the topics he dealt with, while serious, could be understood by all.

William Shakespeare died at the age of fifty-two. He was rich and successful. You still see his plays in English and many other languages.

Obama's story starts in opposite corners of the world. His white mother was born in the heartland of the US. His black father grew up in a tiny village in Kenya. They met during college in Hawaii, but his father left the family when Obama was just two years old and his mother moved to Indonesia.

At 10, Obama moved back to live with his white grandparents in Hawaii where his sense that he didn't belong grew. In his class, a white boy asked Obama if his father ate people. Out of embarrassment, Obama lied to his classmates that his father was a prince (王子). He said he kept asking himself who he was and ended up trying drugs and drinking.

Things changed after the young man made friends with people with a similar background at college. Their experiences back in Africa helped Obama finally to face up to his African origins. He worked hard to become a star at Harvard Law School and the third black senator (参议员) in US history.

At the beginning of his campaign (竞选运动) for the White House, few people thought Obama would win.
