IN the years since the crew of the US' Apollo 17 spacecraft returned from the moon in December 1972, no human has ever left low Earth orbit. In 2003, the same year that the Bush administration gave Nasa the job of returning to the moon in 2020, Yang Liwei became China's first astronaut in space.
