FOR years, the US National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has been urging 20 universities to drop their Native American tribal mascots. The NCAA argues that names like the “Fighting Sioux” (referring to an Indian tribe) of the University of North Dakota (UND) show disrespect. Yet, in the case of UND, some members of the Sioux nation say they feel honored to have a mascot named after them.
