二、推断生词的词义

由于英语单词的数量庞大，学生在阅读过程中遇见没有学过的单词是常见之事，一篇阅读文章中有百分之三的新词是正常的，学生因此常需推断词义。

1.利用构词法推断词义，如:

前缀un-表示“否定”“相反”的意思,后缀-ment是名词的词尾,unemployment由动词employ（雇佣）加前缀un-和后缀-ment构成名词，意为“失业”;

后缀-ly通常是副词的词尾,unexpectedly由动词expect（预料，预期）加前缀un-和加-ed构成形容词后再加后缀-ly构成副词，意为“想不到、意外地、突然地”;

后缀-ility是名词的词尾，availability是由形容词available（可用的、可得到的）加后缀-ility构成，意为“可用，便利”;

2.在阅读过程中利用上下文推断词义，如:

文段一: …“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’.” says Ballmer.“There was just a complete gap in taste.”Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.…（2008广东 A篇）

问题:The underlined word gulf in Para.3 most probably means ______.

A. interest B. distance C. difference D. separation

根据文中第一段最后一句There was a complete gap in taste. 和第二段中的…to move in separate orbits可知。gulf这里是“不同”的意思。所以本题选C。
