SHANGHAI officials tried their best to cleanse the city of embarrassing examples of Chinglish in the run up to the World Expo. They reportedly replaced 1,300 restaurant menus and 400,000 signs. But this also meant scrubbing off slogans that were perfectly grammatical, if a bit untraditional. Some foreigners find the sometimes poetic nature of Chinese signage appealing.
