SCIENTISTS have been listening for messages from outer space for years, with nothing to show for their efforts. Now, a new study argues that they might just be looking for the wrong types of signals. “Broadcasting is expensive, and transmitting signals across light-years would require considerable resources,” Gregory Benford, an astrophysicist at the University of California, Irvine, told Space.com.
